As Dante and Virgil encounter the sinners in the Vestibule of Hell, they witness the Opportunists. These sinners are known for their indifference as they chose to chase to their own interests instead of choosing a side in the battle between Heaven and Hell. Think about your own personal lives and consider the concept of those whom might be considered as Opportunists. Are there people like this your classes? Do you know people like this outside of school? Explain why you would consider them like that, according to how Alighieri explains these sinners. At least 5 sentences. |

I think that people have moments where they can be like the Opportunists. However, I don't think that I know anyone who is a complete Opportunist. I do not understand nor have I experienced anyone who is 100% self-centered. This type of sinner is selfish and only does things that benefit themselves. Being an Opportunist is something that everyone should try to avoid.

I agree with you when you say that you have never met someone who was 100% self-centered, although there are many selfish people I think deep down everyone cares about someone. I agree completely with you when you say that everyone should try and avoid being an opportunist- I don't know anyone who would want to be one.

I completely agree. Although everyone wants to improve their lives from various opportunities, this is not equivalent to insensitivity to those around them.

I think that everyone has a time in their life where they are like opportunists. They are indifferent about a subject in school, or about something that happens in their lives. I don't know anyone who is always an Opportunist. I know people who go back and forth on their views for different topics, however, they are not indifferent all the time. These people are very selfish and only want to help themselves.

I agree. I think we can all definitely be opportunists at times, but most of the time we are unselfish and giving. People have a natural tendency to do what is best for themselves, but we must learn to help others as well.

Our world today is filled with opportunists. I do not personally know anyone who is so selfish that they earn the title "opportunist," nor do I have the right to accuse one of being an opportunist. We all have moments in our lives where we could be considered an opportunist, but we can also have positive moments where we do what is best for others. There are so many situations in our lives where we do not side with good or evil, but just do what is best for us. This is no good and gets us nowhere positive in life.

That is a very interesting perspective on opportunists. I agree with you on the point that everyone has moments in their lives that they can be opportunists and other moments that they can act for other people.

I think that people can be opportunists at specific moments. They choose to do whatever it takes to benefit themselves. I think people in school are often motivated to become opportunists in order to receive higher grades. Most people I know are only opportunist some of the time and usually care about not hurting those around them to get their way. I have never met anyone who is a complete opportunist.

I agree with everything you said, especially that people in school are motivated to become opportunists to earn higher grades. It suggests, and sometimes rightfully so, that students will do whatever it takes to do well.

Everyone has a weakness. For opportunists, that weakness is caring too much about themselves and not enough about others. Although there are plenty people like this in the world today, I choose to believe no one truly cares only about themselves, dismissing the feelings and well being of those around them. Of course there are moments when people become selfish and being to forget about others, but that happens to the best of us. I think everyone could care a little bit less about themselves and a little bit more about others.

I agree with your opinion. There are many times when people can think only of themselves, but I don't believe that anyone completely disregards the lives of those around them just to get what they want.

Every day we come across people who only want to benefit themselves. I don't think they are considered to be an Opportunist though. Being an Opportunist means you are always wanting to take advantage for yourself. I think everyone has a moment where they can be selfish and not want to help others. I don't know anyone who is a complete Opportunist, but it's not something that will help you succeed.

Today, I feel like the world is filled with many opportunists. People usually only do things to benefit themselves. However, I don't think that anyone is one hundred percent an opportunist. People can be selfish, but mainly, they are more willing to help others. There is a balance of being kind and being an opportunist. I don't know anyone who is a complete opportunist.

I agree that the world has more of balance of being kind and being an opportunist. I do not know anyone that is completely an opportunist either and couldn't see many people that couldn't be regretful from there decision if they had portrayed a characteristic of an opportunist.

I personally do not know anyone who I would consider an opportunist. However I do think that everyone can act this way throughout their lives. Many people can or will act selfishly and disregard God's feelings or what he tells us what to do. Most people do have moments where they will blatantly sin and not care about anyone but themselves. We all know people that act this way only sometimes but I have yet to meet that selfish of a person and I hope to never encounter someone who is that self involved that they cant even change their ways to those of God.

I believe their are many opportunists in our world, but I personally do not know anyone like this. Everyone of us be opportunists at some point in our life it just depends how often we do so. Opportunists in general are greedy and selfish for themselves, which leads us away from God. In my opinion I feel like a really good football or basketball player may be considered an opportunist because they obtain all the fame and end up only wanting more and not caring about anyone else. Its people who fall in love with themselves who tend to be opportunists and turn away from what is really good, God.

I think that there is a time and a place where everyone exhibits characteristics of being an opportunist, although, I do not know of anyone who I can distinctly say is an opportunist. Daunte explains that an opportunist is self-centered and takes all opportunities that benefit themselves, not thinking about others. I have been around people that can be self-centered at times or make a decision without considering how it might affect other. But, after a period of time they could become regretful, unlike the opportunists in Daunte's Hell. Being an opportunist is never a good thing.

At times, we are all opportunists. We strive to do what is best for us, though we help others. A true opportunist is someone who has no care or concern for anyone else. Everything they do is done without thinking about others and only they benefit from it. I do not know of any Opportunists inside or outside of school. 2/8/2016 06:04:50 am
Short and sweet Justin, I like it. Seems as if this was done in homeroom, no? Nevertheless, you are correct in the fact that we are all opportunists. We always do try to make the best out of ourselves, and we take advantage of opportunities when present. 2/8/2016 05:52:57 am
I believe that we live in a world full of opportunists. Sometimes they are hiding right under our noses, but it is easy to spot them when you try. For example, the man sitting in front of me could be considered an opportunist, but I will that up for you to decide. Someone in the real world that would be considered an opportunist is someone that does not go out of his way for others. They ride solo, and are always looking to help themselves. When an opportunity is present, they will use it to the best of their ability until it is all used up, and then they move on to the next one. They are always seeking for a new way to benefit themselves.

I believe that there are times in every person's life when they could be considered to be an 'opportunist'. Even the most selfish of people can be found doing something that benefits someone other than themselves. I personally do not know of anyone that is completely for themselves, however I do believe that everyone thinks for themselves sometimes during their lifetimes. It is during the various weak points throughout a person's life that they must decide whether they are for themselves or for others.

I agree with the closing statement of this post and that you are an opportunist when its a weak point in your life or someone else life and you must decide to be for yourself. It is easy for you to not be an opportunist when everything is easy and fine, but once it gets hard then it shows what you really are. This post really clarifies that and is well written.

I believe that we all can be considered Opportunists at some point. Everyone, at some point, chooses themselves over others. This is unfortunately the path that a lot of people choose to follow during their lives. However, there are some people who work to avoid this desire to serve themselves rather than others. In the end, though, most people would end up choosing themselves.

Opportunists are constantly seeking new opportunities that benefit themselves, without consideration of who they go through for success. I believe that everyone has an inner longing to find new routes for themselves. Some choose to pursue opportunities at a higher degree than others, but all reasons are somehow personal. I do not know anyone personally who would be considered an opportunist. All people I know would take others into consideration, rather than having a desperate need for personal gain.

I believe everyone is an opportunist at least once in their life. As humans, we are naturally inclined to act selfish at times. For example, when friends or family get into arguments, most people who are associated with them in some way choose to remain indifferent by not choosing a side. Although the circumstance is much different than that in Inferno, the concept is still the same. I can admit that i have been an opportunist, not wanting to dedicate to one side of the fight.

In my opinion, everyone has a moment in their life when they show characteristics of being an Opportunist. Some people may not be an Opportunist as long as others. Even though everyone may be one at some point, I do not know anyone is an Opportunist all of the time. I am glad to say that I am not surrounded by anyone who I would consider an Opportunist, and puts others before themselves. I hope that I never have to encounter someone who I would consider an Opportunist. Comments are closed.
