He puts doubt into the scene when they dont believe about the ghosts. then shock when he does see it. then a scared anger when he tells it to speak. overall the environment is hostile.

On page 11 Haratio says,"It {harrows} me with fear and wonder." He is talking about when he sees the ghost. He is scared but he is also curious and wants to find out more about the ghost. Shakespeare sets a mood that there is a ghost and that they are scared but want to find out more and that is what they do.

Hamlet writes that the ghost looks like the dead King Hamlet, this sets the mood of creepiness. It would be creepy to see someone who you knew that was recently deceased. There is also a sense of amazement and wonder shown through the Horatio, Marcellus, and Barnardo.

"It harrows me with fear and wonder" shows how Horatio is afraid of it. Then when he says "...with that fair and warlike form in which the majesty of buried Denmark did sometimes march" is saying how the ghost is dressed as if going to battle or something.

Shakespeare creates a sense of fear coming from the soldiers. Marcellus says, "Peace, break thee off! Look where it comes again." Horatio is frightened and says, "What art thou that usurp'st this time of night, Together with that fair and warlike form, In which the majesty of buried Denmark Did sometimes march? By heaven, I charge thee speak." Horatio also says, "Most like. It harrows me with fear and wonder."

When the ghost first appears in Act 1 Scene 1, everyone is terrified. Shakespeare uses words like harrow, fear, tremble, and wonder to really set the mood. He makes you feel like you are seeing the ghost first hand.

They are scared and confused. They don't know if the ghost is real or not real. Of the ghost is the king. Marcellus said “ is it not like the king.”

In act 1 scene 1 Shakesphere sets a suspense mood by making Bernardo, Heretio, and Marcellus see the ghost appear. He sets another mood in the beginning by saying "long live the King!" -Bernardo

"In the same figure like the King that's dead." "Looks he not like the King?" "Before my God, I might not this believe without the sensible and true avouch of mine own eyes." In these three examples Sheakespeare creates a mood of unrest because all the characters are frightened by what they believe to be the ghost of the dead king.

One example of a mood that Shakespeare creates is when the guards first see the ghost in Act 1 scene 1 when Horatio says," Stay! Speak! Speak! I charge thee speak!" It creates the emotion of intensity and just waiting to see if the ghost of King Hamlet will speak to them.

The mood in Act 1 Scene 1 is at first very calm, showed by Barnardo asking, "Have you a quiet guard?" And Francisco replying, "Not a mouse stirring." This quickly changes and goes from calm to mysterious and strange when they spot the ghost, and the mood remains that way for the rest of the scene.

Shakespeare creates a very calm environment, then when the ghost enters it quickly turns to a cautious environment. when it starts everyone is very chill. when the ghost enters everyone starts to panic. Comments are closed.
